Beanies for Billy 2022

Aug 24, 2022 | Principal's News

Gippsland Grammar students across its three campuses will wear a beanie to school next Tuesday, 30 August, to support and raise awareness of brain cancer. The day will honour past student Billy Adams, who died from brain cancer in 2019, aged 20.

Billy lived in Lakes Entrance and was a student at the independent school from 2007-2017, beginning in Year 3 at Bairnsdale Campus before moving to its senior Garnsey Campus and boarding during his final years.

He was a dedicated student who dreamed of being a lawyer according to classmate Ella Baker-Horan who returned the School on Monday (22 August) to talk to senior students about her friend.

Prefects Lara Hall and Rory McLeod together with Old Scholar Ella Baker-Horan getting ready for Beanies for Billy Day.

“Billy sat in the seats you are sitting in. He sang the same school song that you sing. He made the same memories you are making … he was the person who you wanted to be friends with,” Ms Baker-Horan said as she encouraged everyone to don a beanie next week.

“This is why Beanies for Billy is happening … to celebrate the person he was and acknowledge all the children and people out there who aren’t as lucky as us. I want to encourage you to live your best life, the way Billy would’ve but didn’t get the opportunity.”

“Please donate if you can, support if you can, wear a beanie if you can. And continue to be the best version of yourself and if you don’t do it for Billy, do it for someone like Billy. Do it for your Billy.”

Ms Baker-Horan will join Billy’s family and many other friends to participate in Connor’s Run next month helping change the odds for children with brain cancer. Brain cancer is the number one cancer killer of young people.

Billy’s mum Tanya Adams said the family was grateful to the School community for organising such a fantastic event in her son’s memory.

“Billy would be very happy with it,” she said.
