Dec 6, 2019 | Garnsey News

Last Friday evening, I was most fortunate to attend the Chamber Concert held at St Paul’s Cathedral which featured our students alongside members of the Stratford Singers choir. Organised by our Director of Music Mr Matthew Goss, the concert was a special and impressive evening which featured performances by a number of groups, such as the Brass Ensemble, the Cello Ensemble (which doesn’t have the opportunity to perform at some of our other big concerts) and a performance of Gippsland Grammar’s own Mitchell Harvie’s piece “Te Lucis Ante Terminum” by Schoir. Our Junior String Ensemble performed for the very first time and gave an excellent rendition of “May Song”. The concert opened with two of Vivaldi’s most famous choral pieces from The Gippsland Grammar Choir and The Stratford Singers with Sinfonietta, Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus”. The evening’s music concluded with two concerti by the Gippsland Grammar Sinfonia featuring soloists Ruby-McNeill-Johnson and Irene Li and the audience was in awe of their talent and sound. Congratulations to Matthew Goss, teachers and all members of the Choir, Sinfonietta, Sinfonia and Chamber Groups for a wonderful performance. The occasion also provided an opportunity for us to bid farewell to Jenny Candy after such loyal service to singing and choirs at Gippsland Grammar. The Stratford Singers and Gippsland Grammar Choir combined for an impromptu sing of “The Irish Blessing” to say goodbye. Thanks must go to Dean Susanna Pain and the parishioners of St Paul’s for hosting such a wonderful evening and for their delightful catering, as always.

The St Paul’s Cathedral Concert featured performances by a number of Gippsland Grammar ensembles.

Year 7 Orientation
There was plenty of energy at the Garnsey campus this week as we welcomed next year’s Year 7 students for their four-day Garnsey Campus orientation program. After farewelling this year’s Year 12s, our campus felt whole again as we had all six year levels present and going about their learning with great enthusiasm. The program began on Tuesday with a parents and students information session in the Chapel of St. Anne. After this, the day was divided into two parts: one for parents and one for students. The students met their Mentors and classes and were able to get to know each other before going to some timetabled lessons and meeting their Peer Support leaders. Parents had an opportunity to also meet the Mentors and to hear from a number of staff about the use of VOS and the continuous reporting model for 2020.  From Wednesday, the Year 7 students completed timetabled lessons and went to Chapel and Sport just like they can expect to do as Year 7 students next year. We are thrilled with the confidence and curiosity of the Year 7 students and look forward to welcoming them back to Garnsey in 2020.

House Leaders
This morning we inducted the House Leaders for 2020 and it was great to have the Year 7 students present for this occasion also. A ceremony was held in Garnsey Hall where Ms Kate Ray spoke about leadership. It was lovely to welcome many parents and guests of the House Leaders to the induction service followed by morning tea. A number of students are on exchange and could not be with us for the induction; these students will be presented at the start of next year. Congratulations to the following students:

Young Scholars can look forward to forming a supportive community with the other members of the program and members of the University through a tailored program of events and activities.

Final Day arrangements
Next Thursday (December 13) students will start the day with a final assembly, followed by Periods 1-4. A normal lunchtime will be followed by Sport, as usual. Many intermediate and senior SEISA team selections will be finalised at this time, as SEISA Summer Sport commences on the second Thursday of Term 1, 2020.  An afternoon Mentor Group will facilitate the distribution of Claresco and end of year reports. Dismissal will occur as normal at 3.23pm and students will bring home their end of Semester 2 report and a copy of Claresco. A reminder that Celebration Night will begin at 7.30pm in Garnsey Hall.

Celebration Night
Lists of prize and award winners are displayed in the ISC and students should check these to ascertain if they have been awarded a prize. Students will then select from a range of books in the ISC and these will be presented at Celebration Night.

Blackwood House Christmas Lunch
This year members of our Gippsland Grammar community will once again provide a traditional Christmas lunch to any members of the community who wish to join us at Blackwood House (Boarding House) on Christmas Day. I encourage you to share news of this event with anyone who may like to come along from 12.15pm, entering through the Raglan Street entrance. We would love to hear from a couple of School families who may be able to assist with table setting the day prior to Christmas or to help serve lunch on Christmas Day.  If you are able to help or have any questions about this event, please contact

Kind regards,
Jan Henry
